February 16th Guild Meeting at the Western Watauga Community Center at 10:30

Our next guild meeting is this Saturday at 10:30 at the Western
Watauga Community Center starting at 10:30. This is a show and tell
meeting so bring all the wonderful projects you have been working on
hopefully to show at the Jones House and the Blue Ridge Fiber Fest in
June.

Our Agenda is as follows:

Discuss and vote on going to the Spring Fiber Fare at Sycamore Shoals
in lieu of our March meeting like we did last year since they are held
at the same time: This event is hosted by the Overmountain Weavers and
is held March 16th from 10 – 4. Here is their website:
http://www.omwg.net

Discuss show at Jones House and the Blue Ridge Fiber Fest

Discuss and vote on having all our guild meetings on the 3rd Sat. of
each month rather than moving to Thursday evenings in the summer months

Susan Sharpe may do a demo on a simple way to remove rust from weaving
harnesses using vinegar

Show and tell

Bring snacks to share if you would like. We do enjoy them.

See you Sat.

Felt Workshop: Wet Felted Vessels from Valentines to Vases – Spring 2019

WET FELTED VESSELS “FROM VALENTINES to VASES”

Indulge your creativity through fibers!  In the workshop, you will create one or more 3-dimensional wool vessels.  Embellishments can be added such as silk hankies, silk roving, wool fibers and yarns ….to  decorate your one of a kind vessel.

Wool fibers will be layered around a foam resist, wet with slightly soapy water, then rubbed and rolled to tangle and bind the fibers together to form a non-woven fabric, which is felt.  To shrink and full your forms, you will squeeze and possibly throw them, making them more dense and thick.

Felt making is a very physical activity.  Most of the work will be done while standing.  Wear comfortable shoes and clothing that you don’t mind getting wet.   Each person should bring 2 or 3 old bath towels.

For beginners & all levels.

Date:  Saturday, February 2 (1 day)

January Meeting is on the 19th at the Watauga County Library

Dear all Guild Members and Friends,

Our next meeting will be held at the downtown library again next Sat., Jan. 19th, from 10:30-1:00.

We have quite a treat in store for our program. Mary Gale from Mountain City has offered to teach us how to weave hearts from reeds or paper or whatever. I have photos here of some of her larger work. We will of course be making smaller versions of the hearts. We need a head count for this for Mary to plan for materials and to get them started for us so please respond to [email protected] if you will be attending on Sat.

Also on our agenda is planning for 3 upcoming shows/events.
We have the Jones House Show coming up in June

We are registering to show/demo/sell at Edgewood Residency this summer and the deadline for registration for this has been extended to the end of this month so we can discuss this.

Susan Payne has sent info about showing in Caldwell County for 2020. The deadline for that is also the end of this month. Here is the link to this info for you to take a look at:

As always, bring treats to share at the meeting if you so desire.

November Guild Meeting Sat., Nov. 17th at the Library Downtown at 10:30 AM

We have scheduled this Sat.’s meeting at the Watauga Library downtown to see how it appeals to members having a more centralized location especially during the winter months. It would be great if this would increase our attendance and membership. Please let your fellow fiber enthusiasts know about this and ask them to join us as a guest if they would like to. We would love to have new people join our Fiber Swap in Dec.!

Also note that this is a Football Game Day but shouldn’t be too much of an issue for us since we are meeting in the morning. We will probably need to get parking passes from the library because of this though. There is a kitchen so we can have refreshments so bring whatever you would like to share.

Also, if you live in the Cove Creek area and would like to carpool to the library, contact Susan Sharpe!

Guild meeting:
Sat. Nov. 17th
10:30 am-12:30 pm
Watauga County Library
140 Queen St, Boone, NC

Agenda:
Show and Tell
Discuss changing our meetings to Sat. year-round
Plan show at the Jones house for June 2019
Discuss future meetings at the library. For example we could meet at the library during the winter months or we could alternate show and tell meetings at the library with having program meetings at the Community Center.

October Guild Meeting Thursday the 18th at 6PM

Our guild meeting is this Thursday evening at 6 PM at the Western Watauga Community Center. We have a special treat in store for us. Rita Collie has graciously volunteered to present a program on her Master Weaver Submission which I am super excited about! Several of you have mentioned missing the demo on clasped weft last month so I will bring my little Structo loom again to show that if time/interest permits!

We also need to vote and install our officers for 2019. So far the same people have offered to remain in these roles but if anyone else would like to be a part of our board, please let us know. We would welcome you.

Another item to discuss is programs for next year so be thinking about ideas for this.

Also, please pay your dues to Janeene if you haven’t already done so. Dues are $15/year.

Bring a snack, beverage to share if you would like.

Next month we will change to our winter hours, meeting on Saturday’s at 10:30. We will have show and tell for November and do our fiber swap and potluck for December.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday at 6. Don’t forget our earlier start time!

Beginning Spinning on the Wheel – Fall 2018

Do you wish to learn how to spin on a wheel?

Hand spinning is one of the traditional crafts of the Appalachian Mountain Region.  It was one of the first steps to creating cloth whether that fabric is knit, crocheted or woven.

Students will learn the parts of the spinning wheel along with drafting and spinning the fiber on the bobbin of the wheel.  They will spin two bobbins, learn to ply the yarn and measure the spun yarn onto a niddy noddy.
